In 2022, the Polish aluminium market increased by 20% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In 2022, overseas shipments of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) decreased by -10.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 471%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 366% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for aluminium exports from Poland, accounting for a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, aluminium exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovakia (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +94.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+10.9% per year) and Slovakia (+97.9% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) exports from Poland, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic totaled +100.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+11.9% per year) and Slovakia (+101.2% per year).

In 2022, the average aluminium export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 25% against the previous year. After two years of decline, purchases abroad of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) increased by 3.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Iceland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) were the main suppliers of aluminium imports to Poland, together accounting for 48% of total imports. The Netherlands, India, Canada, Mozambique, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +64.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest aluminium suppliers to Poland were Iceland ($X), Russia ($X) and Venezuela ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports. In 2022, the average aluminium import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, aluminium import price increased by +67.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
