In 2021, the amount of artificial corundum exported from Poland dropped dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -43.8% against the year before. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, artificial corundum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the main destinations of artificial corundum exports from Poland, with a combined 59% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Italy, Belarus and Russia, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +107.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+24.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of artificial corundum were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial corundum imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest artificial corundum supplier to Poland, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, artificial corundum imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+17.5% per year) and Germany (+2.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and Russia ($X) were the largest artificial corundum suppliers to Poland, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, France, Hungary, Ukraine, Italy, Slovenia and the UK, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
