In 2022, the Polish barley market increased by 4.4% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decrease. Barley consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of barley in Poland totaled X tons per ha, picking up by 3% on the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. In value terms, barley exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 245%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Poland, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Algeria (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+1.3% per year) and Algeria (+2.6% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for barley exports from Poland, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+3.6% per year) and Algeria (+0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average barley export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 39% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley export price increased by +75.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Barley Imports
Imports into Poland
In 2022, overseas purchases of barley were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 59%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, barley imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Denmark (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Poland, together comprising 65% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +58.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Denmark ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Poland, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Denmark amounted to +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+51.0% per year) and the UK (+68.1% per year).

In 2022, the average barley import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
