Buckwheat Market Size in Poland

The Polish buckwheat market rose notably to $X in 2022, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. Over the period under review, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, buckwheat exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 92%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for buckwheat exports from Poland, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, buckwheat exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy amounted to +12.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+17.2% per year) and the Netherlands (-13.1% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for buckwheat exports from Poland, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy stood at +21.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+25.3% per year) and Austria (+11.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average buckwheat export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 49%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Italy ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, imports of buckwheat into Poland shrank dramatically to X tons, falling by -23.4% against 2021. In general, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 270%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, buckwheat imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 213%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Lithuania (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) were the main suppliers of buckwheat imports to Poland, together accounting for 84% of total imports. Kazakhstan, Estonia and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +48.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest buckwheat suppliers to Poland were Lithuania ($X), Russia ($X) and Latvia ($X), together accounting for 86% of total imports. Kazakhstan, Estonia and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 76% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
