Chocolate Market Size in Poland

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Polish chocolate market, when its value decreased by -0.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fifth year in a row, Poland recorded growth in shipments abroad of chocolate and cocoa products, which increased by 2.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +109.2% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chocolate exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +114.4% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of chocolate exports from Poland, with a combined 46% share of total exports. Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Romania, Ukraine, the United States, Denmark, Lithuania, Russia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +39.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for chocolate exported from Poland were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 43% share of total exports. The Netherlands, the United States, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +33.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average chocolate export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 9%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of chocolate and cocoa products decreased by -2.5% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, chocolate imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest chocolate supplier to Poland, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, chocolate imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X tons), with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +6.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+14.2% per year) and Belgium (+9.1% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chocolate and cocoa products to Poland, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+12.2% per year) and Italy (+3.2% per year).

In 2022, the average chocolate import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
