In 2021, the Polish cider, perry and mead market increased by 3.8% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Cider, perry and mead consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Production of Cider, Perry, Mead And Other Fermented Beverages in Poland
In value terms, cider, perry and mead production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Cider, perry and mead production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Poland
In 2021, approx. X litres of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages were exported from Poland; picking up by 29% on the previous year's figure. In general, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +58.3% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +80.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 33%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Lithuania (X litres) was the main destination for cider, perry and mead exports from Poland, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X litres), sevenfold. Germany (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lithuania stood at -2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+22.9% per year) and Germany (+1.6% per year).
In value terms, Lithuania ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for cider, perry and mead exported from Poland worldwide, together accounting for 46% of total exports. Romania, Russia, the UK, the Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia, Belgium, Latvia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Among the main countries of destination, Croatia, with a CAGR of +104.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average cider, perry and mead export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, falling by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Cider, Perry, Mead And Other Fermented Beverages
Imports into Poland
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, when their volume decreased by -76.5% to X litres. In general, imports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 576% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 284% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ukraine (X litres) constituted the largest cider, perry and mead supplier to Poland, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Moldova (X litres), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine amounted to +48.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-18.5% per year) and Moldova (+18.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest cider, perry and mead suppliers to Poland were Ukraine ($X), Germany ($X) and Moldova ($X), with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Lithuania, Spain, the Czech Republic, the United States and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 25%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +67.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cider, perry and mead import price amounted to $X per litre, shrinking by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 74%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per litre), while the price for Ukraine ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
