The Polish cigars and cigarillos market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 390% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 513% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Greece (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of cigars and cigarillos exports from Poland, with a combined 65% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +261.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+25.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, the amount of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos imported into Poland dropped sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -18.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 379%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 173% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest cigars and cigarillos supplier to Poland, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, cigars and cigarillos imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Latvia (X tons), with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.3% per year) and Latvia (+212.8% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos to Poland, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cuba ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +21.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cuba (+4.3% per year) and Belgium (-6.3% per year).

In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 199% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cuba ($X per ton), while the price for Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
