For the fourth year in a row, Poland recorded growth in shipments abroad of cinnamon (canella), which increased by 31% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 56%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, cinnamon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for cinnamon exports from Poland, with a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, cinnamon exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (X tons), fourfold. Romania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +20.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+19.3% per year) and Romania (+10.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for cinnamon exported from Poland were the Czech Republic ($X), Portugal ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for 61% of total exports. Germany, Slovakia, France, Russia, Hungary, Denmark, Latvia, Sweden and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
Among the main countries of destination, France, with a CAGR of +114.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cinnamon export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 57%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+12.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland
In 2022, approx. X tons of cinnamon (canella) were imported into Poland; picking up by 42% on the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cinnamon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of cinnamon imports to Poland, together accounting for 81% of total imports. Italy, Madagascar, Israel and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +208.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest cinnamon suppliers to Poland, with a combined 79% share of total imports. Italy, Madagascar, India and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +173.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cinnamon import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 41%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
