In 2022, the Polish cocoa bean market decreased by -26.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. Exports from Poland
In 2022, the amount of cocoa beans exported from Poland fell significantly to X tons, shrinking by -37.1% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 29,230%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cocoa bean exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 14,513%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for cocoa bean exports from Poland, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, cocoa bean exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Estonia (X tons), with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +155.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+39.5% per year) and Estonia (-10.9% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for cocoa beans exports from Poland, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +141.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+53.5% per year) and Estonia (-3.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average cocoa bean export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 130%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+23.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland
In 2022, supplies from abroad of cocoa beans decreased by -19.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cocoa bean imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cocoa bean to Poland, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, cocoa bean imports from Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ecuador (X tons), threefold. Peru (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Cote d'Ivoire was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (+6.7% per year) and Peru (+68.2% per year).
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cocoa beans to Poland, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Peru, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Cote d'Ivoire was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (+4.8% per year) and Peru (+56.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cocoa bean import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Sao Tome and Principe ($X per ton) and Peru ($X per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) and Ecuador ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
