After two years of growth, the Polish cold-rolled steel products market decreased by -1.4% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) exported from Poland contracted to X tons, waning by -9.8% compared with 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, cold-rolled steel products exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for cold-rolled steel products exports from Poland, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, cold-rolled steel products exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hungary (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+6.3% per year) and Hungary (+15.4% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the largest markets for cold-rolled steel products exported from Poland worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Slovakia, France, Lithuania, Italy, Estonia, Latvia and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +232.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cold-rolled steel products export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 49%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) decreased by -16.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, cold-rolled steel products imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cold-rolled steel products to Poland, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, cold-rolled steel products imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+2.9% per year) and Italy (+7.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of flat-rolled products of iron or steel (not further worked than cold-rolled) to Poland, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Finland, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+10.7% per year) and Finland (+12.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cold-rolled steel products import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cold-rolled steel products import price increased by +71.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 38%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
