For the tenth year in a row, the Polish frozen freshwater fish market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 4.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a buoyant expansion. Frozen freshwater fish consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Poland

In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen freshwater fish decreased by -22.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 130%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Benin (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of frozen freshwater fish exports from Poland, together comprising 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by Rwanda, Romania, Moldova, Lithuania, South Africa and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +295.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for frozen freshwater fish exported from Poland were Azerbaijan ($X), Germany ($X) and Benin ($X), together comprising 51% of total exports. Lithuania, Romania, Rwanda, Estonia, Moldova and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +403.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average frozen freshwater fish export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -17.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+27.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

In 2021, the amount of frozen freshwater fish imported into Poland soared to X tons, jumping by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 34%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Iceland (X tons) were the main suppliers of frozen freshwater fish imports to Poland, with a combined 56% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Canada and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +273.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Norway ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest frozen freshwater fish suppliers to Poland, together comprising 45% of total imports. Germany, Iceland, Canada, Sweden and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +287.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average frozen freshwater fish import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
