Grape Market Size in Poland

After two years of growth, the Polish grape market decreased by -7.1% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +60.1% against 2016 indices. Grape Production in Poland

In value terms, grape production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average grape yield in Poland declined to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. In general, the yield continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2.8%. The grape yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. In 2022, shipments abroad of grapes decreased by -20.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grape exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for grape exports from Poland, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, grape exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mongolia (X tons), with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ukraine stood at -19.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+17.5% per year) and Mongolia (+34.4% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for grapes exports from Poland, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine amounted to -17.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+14.1% per year) and Mongolia (+33.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average grape export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of grapes decreased by -5.5% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, grape imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grape to Poland, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, grape imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. Peru (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+15.3% per year) and Peru (+6.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest grape suppliers to Poland were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, Chile, India, Moldova, Egypt, Greece and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Among the main suppliers, Moldova, with a CAGR of +73.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average grape import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 11%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
