For the third consecutive year, the Polish metal wool market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.4% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable descent. Metal wool consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Metal wool exports from Poland contracted modestly to X tons in 2022, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 43%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, metal wool exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 25%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tons) was the main destination for metal wool exports from Poland, accounting for a 20% share of total exports. Moreover, metal wool exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Romania was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+33.0% per year) and Germany (-6.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for metal wool exported from Poland were Germany ($X), Romania ($X) and Lithuania ($X), together comprising 47% of total exports. Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Serbia, Moldova, Russia, Norway and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In 2022, the amount of iron or steel wool imported into Poland declined to X tons, which is down by -3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, metal wool imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 19%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest metal wool supplier to Poland, with a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, metal wool imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), ninefold. In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of iron or steel wool to Poland, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-7.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+112.7% per year).

The average metal wool import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
