The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for bovine and equine leather exports from Poland, accounting for a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, bovine and equine leather exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +26.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+11.3% per year) and Germany (-10.7% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather of bovine and equine animals exports from Poland, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Ukraine amounted to +10.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-7.3% per year) and Italy (+8.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average bovine and equine leather export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -20.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Poland
In 2021, supplies from abroad of leather of bovine and equine animals was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the main suppliers of bovine and equine leather imports to Poland, with a combined 61% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Brazil, the United States, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Denmark, the Czech Republic, India, Uruguay and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +77.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather of bovine and equine animals to Poland, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy amounted to -3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-3.6% per year) and South Africa (+72.8% per year).
