Exports from Poland

In 2022, approx. X tons of lettuce and chicory were exported from Poland; remaining stable against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ukraine (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main destinations of lettuce and chicory exports from Poland, with a combined 50% share of total exports. Germany, Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus, Spain, Latvia, Romania, Sweden and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +217.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from Poland, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9% share.

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

Lettuce and chicory imports into Poland expanded modestly to X tons in 2022, surging by 1.9% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +22.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest lettuce and chicory supplier to Poland, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain totaled +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.0% per year) and Germany (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest lettuce and chicory suppliers to Poland were Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 90% of total imports. Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.5%.

Among the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +20.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 6.8%. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
