Lithium Carbonate Market Size in Poland

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Polish lithium carbonate market, when its value increased by 28% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a remarkable increase. Lithium carbonate consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lithium carbonate exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable expansion. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for lithium carbonate exports from Poland, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, lithium carbonate exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X kg), with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at +10.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+3.2% per year) and Ukraine (-27.6% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for lithium carbonates exports from Poland, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to +13.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-20.0% per year) and Belarus (+30.4% per year).

In 2021, the average lithium carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of lithium carbonates were imported into Poland; picking up by 28% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium carbonate imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lithium carbonate to Poland, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium carbonate imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), twofold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +55.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+84.2% per year) and Belgium (+8.5% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lithium carbonates to Poland, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +69.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+57.0% per year) and Germany (+15.4% per year).

In 2021, the average lithium carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
