The Polish malt market totaled $X in 2021, increasing by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep slump. Malt consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Poland
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of malt (not roasted), when their volume increased by 105% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 174% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) were the main destinations of malt exports from Poland, with a combined 61% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Nicaragua, the UK, Ghana, Guatemala, Japan and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nicaragua (with a CAGR of +4,095.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Germany ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the largest markets for malt exported from Poland worldwide, together accounting for 58% of total exports. Cambodia, Nicaragua, the UK, Ghana, Guatemala, Japan and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +3,455.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($X per ton) and Nicaragua ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tunisia (+12.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Imports
Imports into Poland
For the fourth year in a row, Poland recorded growth in purchases abroad of malt (not roasted), which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 65%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main suppliers of malt imports to Poland, with a combined 93% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria and Germany, which together accounted for a further 6.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +169.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt suppliers to Poland were Slovakia ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Lithuania ($X), together accounting for 92% of total imports. Austria and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.8%.
Austria, with a CAGR of +122.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average malt import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and Lithuania ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
