In 2021, the Polish market for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences increased by 1.9% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed resilient growth. Manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1.3% against the previous year. Manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences increased by 97% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 200%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 211% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons) was the main destination for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from Poland, accounting for a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X tons), threefold. Lithuania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia totaled +101.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+10.2% per year) and Lithuania (+51.1% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from Poland, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to +131.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+56,522.1% per year) and the UK (+229.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 207% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+61.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

In 2021, supplies from abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -11.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 147%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 186%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Romania (X tons) constituted the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier to Poland, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports from Romania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Romania totaled +113.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+24.0% per year) and Belgium (+104.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences suppliers to Poland were Italy ($X), Romania ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 82% of total imports. Belgium, the Netherlands, Malaysia and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +136.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average import price for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences import price increased by +93.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
