In 2022, the Polish mate market decreased by -36.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of mate decreased by -26.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 357% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 507%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main destinations of mate exports from Poland, together comprising 59% of total exports. Spain, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Portugal, Lithuania, Ukraine, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +196.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for mate exported from Poland were Brazil ($X), the UK ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 50% share of total exports. Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Among the main countries of destination, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +197.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average mate export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 73% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mate Imports
Imports into Poland
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of mate decreased by -34.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 204% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, mate imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 178%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Paraguay (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main suppliers of mate imports to Poland, with a combined 93% share of total imports. Germany and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.4%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +1,188.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Paraguay ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X) constituted the largest mate suppliers to Poland, together comprising 89% of total imports. Germany and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.1%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +932.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average mate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
