Nitrates Market Size in Poland
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Polish nitrates market, when its value decreased by -18.5% to $X. In general, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) were exported from Poland; waning by -3% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +23.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, nitrates exports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +26.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main destinations of nitrates exports from Poland, with a combined 33% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Spain, the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, the United States, Mexico, Vietnam, Hungary and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 45%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +50.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for nitrates exported from Poland were Italy ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 37% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Brazil, the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, the United States, Vietnam, Mexico, South Korea and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 41%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +37.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrates export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 7.6%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Nitrates Imports
Imports into Poland
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) decreased by -6.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 69%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, nitrates imports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Norway (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main suppliers of nitrates imports to Poland, with a combined 73% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, the Netherlands, China, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +94.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest nitrates suppliers to Poland were Norway ($X), Russia ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 44% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Germany, China and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 41%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +82.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average nitrates import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 43% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+22.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
