The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, packaging materials exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +54.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for packaging materials exports from Poland, with a 21% share of total exports. Moreover, packaging materials exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+7.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (+5.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest markets for packaging materials exported from Poland worldwide, with a combined 35% share of total exports.
Italy, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average packaging materials export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland
After ten years of growth, supplies from abroad of packaging materials decreased by -5.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.9% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, packaging materials imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest packaging materials supplier to Poland, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, packaging materials imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), fivefold. Finland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+11.4% per year) and Finland (+7.8% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of packaging materials to Poland, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (+7.2% per year) and Austria (+13.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
