For the third year in a row, the Polish pear market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -41.9% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption faced a deep slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Pear Production in Poland

In value terms, pear production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 57%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of pears in Poland skyrocketed to X tons per ha, jumping by 40% compared with the previous year's figure. For the fourth year in a row, Poland recorded growth in overseas shipments of pears, which increased by 21% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 81%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pear exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for pear exports from Poland, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, pear exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), more than tenfold. Estonia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belarus totaled +40.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+33.3% per year) and Estonia (+77.3% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for pears exports from Poland, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Estonia, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belarus totaled +30.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+1.4% per year) and Estonia (+81.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average pear export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

Pear imports into Poland fell to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -10.4% against 2020. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +34.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 81%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, pear imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +34.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest pear supplier to Poland, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, pear imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +12.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+10.4% per year) and Spain (-1.0% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pears to Poland, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands stood at +13.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+10.6% per year) and Spain (+1.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average pear import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 36%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
