In 2022, the Polish market for solar cells and light-emitting diodes decreased by -37.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 51% against the previous year. Solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports from Poland fell notably to X units in 2022, waning by -28.8% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, posted temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Ukraine (X units), Germany (X units) and Hungary (X units) were the main destinations of solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports from Poland, together accounting for 53% of total exports. Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Austria, the United States, Sweden, Spain and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for North Macedonia (with a CAGR of +412.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Germany ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest markets for solar cells and light-emitting diodes exported from Poland worldwide, together comprising 32% of total exports. The Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain, Estonia, Lithuania, Austria and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +275.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for solar cells and light-emitting diodes stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 7.1%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, supplies from abroad of solar cells and light-emitting diodes decreased by -37.6% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 467% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, solar cells and light-emitting diodes imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 202% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest solar cells and light-emitting diodes supplier to Poland, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, solar cells and light-emitting diodes imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X units), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +83.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+128.7% per year) and Germany (+67.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of solar cells and light-emitting diodes to Poland, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +41.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+48.2% per year) and Germany (+34.6% per year).

In 2022, the average import price for solar cells and light-emitting diodes amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a dramatic descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
