In 2022, overseas shipments of pig fat decreased by -23.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pig fat exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for pig fat exports from Poland, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, pig fat exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ukraine amounted to -2.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+6.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+0.7% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for pig fat exports from Poland, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 7.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine totaled -3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+6.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+97.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average pig fat export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 44% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Turkmenistan ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland
In 2022, purchases abroad of pig fat decreased by -2.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 214%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
In value terms, pig fat imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 194%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pig fat to Poland, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, pig fat imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at +21.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+18.5% per year) and Spain (+14.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pig fat to Poland, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +23.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+21.8% per year) and Spain (+14.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average pig fat import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pig fat import price increased by +42.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Netherlands ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
