In 2021, the Polish pig iron market was finally on the rise to reach $X after six years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. After two years of decline, overseas shipments of pig iron and spiegeleisen increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed tangible growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for pig iron exports from Poland, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, pig iron exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), fourfold. Slovenia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic totaled +11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+12.9% per year) and Slovenia (+107.1% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for pig iron exports from Poland, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovenia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Czech Republic stood at +14.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+15.1% per year) and Slovenia (+112.9% per year).

In 2021, the average pig iron export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 60% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Hungary ($X per ton) and Slovenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of pig iron and spiegeleisen was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a temperate expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main suppliers of pig iron imports to Poland, with a combined 84% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
