Plastic Box Market Size in Poland

The Polish plastic box market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, increasing by 8% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas shipments of plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles decreased by -1.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic box exports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for plastic box exports from Poland, with a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic box exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), fourfold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany stood at +7.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+5.2% per year) and Slovakia (+23.8% per year).

It was followed by Belgium, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany stood at +7.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+6.5% per year) and Belgium (+2.4% per year).

In 2022, the average plastic box export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

For the third consecutive year, Poland recorded growth in overseas purchases of plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, plastic box imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Slovakia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic box imports to Poland, together accounting for 61% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +58.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles to Poland, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+1.2% per year) and China (+9.6% per year).

In 2022, the average plastic box import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 14%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
