In 2022, the Polish recovered paper market increased by 14% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Germany (X tons) was the main destination for recovered paper exports from Poland, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, recovered paper exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), tenfold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +8.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+10.2% per year) and Austria (+5.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for recovered paper exports from Poland, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany stood at +11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+9.0% per year) and Hungary (+12.6% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 38% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, the amount of recovered paper imported into Poland fell notably to X tons, with a decrease of -15.1% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, recovered paper imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 143%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

The Czech Republic (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main suppliers of recovered paper imports to Poland, together comprising 53% of total imports. Germany, Sweden, Latvia, France, Finland, Norway, the UK, Slovakia and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
