Rye Market Size in Poland

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Polish rye market, when its value increased by 51% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Rye consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Rye Production in Poland

In value terms, rye production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of rye in Poland rose slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 3.2% on 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rye exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 160% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for rye exports from Poland, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, rye exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-2.7% per year) and Spain (-17.1% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for rye exports from Poland, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 2.7% share.

In 2022, the amount of rye imported into Poland contracted notably to X tons, dropping by -59.4% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 566% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rye imports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of rye to Poland, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, rye imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Lithuania (X tons), with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled +14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-9.1% per year) and Lithuania (-26.3% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rye to Poland, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine totaled +14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-8.2% per year) and Denmark (+65.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average rye import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 126%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
