Soap Market Size in Poland

The Polish soap market contracted significantly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -36.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soap production declined markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 42%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of soap decreased by -6.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, soap exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for soap exports from Poland, accounting for a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, soap exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), twofold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to +16.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+21.5% per year) and Hungary (+7.9% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for soap exports from Poland, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +18.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+17.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (+9.6% per year).

In 2021, the average soap export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 22%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, imports of soap into Poland dropped to X tons, reducing by -5.2% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, soap imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +84.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 41%. The average soap import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
