Sorghum Market Size in Poland

In 2022, the Polish sorghum market decreased by -29.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Sorghum consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

For the ninth consecutive year, Poland recorded growth in overseas shipments of sorghum, which increased by 42% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 519% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, sorghum exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 318% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Poland, accounting for a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), tenfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +48.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+8.0% per year) and the UK (+97.2% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Poland, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to +45.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+61.7% per year) and Belgium (+7.9% per year).

The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of sorghum, when their volume decreased by -28.7% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, sorghum imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 71%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest sorghum supplier to Poland, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, sorghum imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hungary (X tons), twofold. Slovakia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled +22.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (-1.2% per year) and Slovakia (+17.4% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sorghum to Poland, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine amounted to +23.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (-1.5% per year) and Slovakia (+17.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sorghum import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 41%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Ukraine ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
