The Polish sparkling wine market declined to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced downturn. Sparkling wine consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of sparkling wine decreased by -10.5% to X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 159% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 164% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia (X litres) was the main destination for sparkling wine exports from Poland, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, sparkling wine exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X litres), fourfold. The Netherlands (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +27.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+14.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+117.2% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for sparkling wine exports from Poland, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to +44.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+10.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+118.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average sparkling wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, falling by -12.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Russia ($X per litre) and the Netherlands ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per litre) and Latvia ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

For the third year in a row, Poland recorded growth in purchases abroad of sparkling wine, which increased by 0.1% to X litres in 2022. In general, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 128%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of sparkling wine to Poland, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, sparkling wine imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X litres), sixfold. Spain (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at +23.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+10.0% per year) and Spain (+17.9% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sparkling wine to Poland, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy amounted to +23.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+9.6% per year) and Germany (+12.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sparkling wine import price amounted to $X per litre, declining by -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 22%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Lithuania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
