In value terms, sweet potato exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 84,618% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for sweet potato exports from Poland, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, sweet potato exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), fourfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ukraine stood at +90.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+76.6% per year) and the UK (+19.1% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sweet potatoes exports from Poland, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine amounted to +88.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+0.3% per year) and Romania (+39.8% per year).

In 2021, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 2,255% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+30.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Poland

For the eighth consecutive year, Poland recorded growth in supplies from abroad of sweet potatoes, which increased by 39% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 130%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, sweet potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of sweet potato imports to Poland, together accounting for 92% of total imports. Slovenia, Belgium and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.2%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +315.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sweet potato import price increased by +17.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 132% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
