In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Polish tobacco market, when its value decreased by -44.2% to $X. Tobacco exports from Poland dropped to X tons in 2021, waning by -2.2% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, tobacco exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of tobacco exports from Poland, with a combined 38% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +237.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Algeria ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tobacco exported from Poland worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Algeria, with a CAGR of +265.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, tobacco export price increased by +70.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tobacco Imports
Imports into Poland
In 2021, overseas purchases of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) decreased by -13.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, tobacco imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 113%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest tobacco supplier to Poland, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, tobacco imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fivefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +18.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+83.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+13.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest tobacco suppliers to Poland were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Romania ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +355.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 51% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+71.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
