After five years of growth, shipments abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -7.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, uncooked pasta exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 35%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for uncooked pasta exports from Poland, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, uncooked pasta exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), sixfold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ukraine amounted to +22.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+19.6% per year) and Belarus (+22.2% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for uncooked pasta exports from Poland, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine amounted to +20.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+21.7% per year) and Denmark (+2.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average uncooked pasta export price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Uncooked Pasta Imports
Imports into Poland
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of uncooked pasta, when their volume decreased by -2.6% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, uncooked pasta imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of uncooked pasta imports to Poland, with a combined 81% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +78.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of uncooked pasta to Poland, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy amounted to +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-1.0% per year) and Germany (-3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average uncooked pasta import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Latvia ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+15.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
