The Polish unmanufactured tobacco market reduced to $X in 2022, which is down by -10.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw slight growth. Exports from Poland

In 2022, exports of tobacco (unmanufactured) from Poland expanded rapidly to X tons, picking up by 14% on the previous year's figure. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +17.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Poland, together comprising 52% of total exports. Russia, France, Croatia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Mexico, Greece, Belarus and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +138.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Poland worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports.

In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -13.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 18%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, imports of tobacco (unmanufactured) into Poland expanded slightly to X tons, picking up by 2.1% against the year before. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -2.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplier to Poland, accounting for a 26% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. Malawi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil stood at +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+9.1% per year) and Malawi (+5.3% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tobacco (unmanufactured) to Poland, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+8.3% per year) and the United States (+1.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -11.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 5.6%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
