In 2021, the Polish enamels and glazes market decreased by -9.7% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

For the third year in a row, Poland recorded growth in overseas shipments of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass, which increased by 21% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, enamels and glazes exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +37.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for enamels and glazes exports from Poland, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, enamels and glazes exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), sixfold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic totaled +17.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+28.4% per year) and Ukraine (+25.8% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass exports from Poland, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic amounted to +19.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+28.0% per year) and Ukraine (+29.3% per year).

In 2021, the average enamels and glazes export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Poland

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass, when their volume decreased by -5.2% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, enamels and glazes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of enamels and glazes imports to Poland, with a combined 87% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany and France, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +93.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest enamels and glazes suppliers to Poland were Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 16%.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
