The Polish market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, when their volume decreased by -10.4% to X litres. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages rose rapidly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

France (X litres), Germany (X litres) and the United States (X litres) were the main destinations of exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages from Poland, together accounting for 43% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hungary, Ukraine, the UK, Togo, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Latvia and Canada, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +134.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages exports from Poland, comprising 42% of total exports. In 2022, the average export price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X per litre, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, the amount of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages imported into Poland rose significantly to X litres, growing by 13% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Finland (X litres), Lithuania (X litres) and Italy (X litres) were the main suppliers of imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages to Poland, with a combined 43% share of total imports. Sweden, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Germany, the UK, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Bulgaria and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 50%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +49.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages suppliers to Poland were Italy ($X), Finland ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 37% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Sweden, Lithuania, Ireland, the Netherlands, Greece, the UK, Spain, Ukraine, Belgium and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 50%.

Among the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +60.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X per litre, declining by -4.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 13%. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per litre), while the price for Lithuania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
