Wood Fuel Market Size in Poland

The Polish wood fuel market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, growing by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. For the third consecutive year, Poland recorded growth in shipments abroad of wood fuel, which increased by 10% to X cubic meters in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 108%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 99%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Germany (X cubic meters) was the main destination for wood fuel exports from Poland, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, wood fuel exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Denmark (X cubic meters), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X cubic meters), with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany stood at +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (+8.0% per year) and the UK (+72.1% per year).

The average wood fuel export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, growing by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 54% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of wood fuel decreased by -24.9% to X cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 321%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, wood fuel imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 196%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of wood fuel to Poland, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, wood fuel imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X cubic meters), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X cubic meters), with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic totaled +89.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+9.2% per year) and Germany (+6.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest wood fuel suppliers to Poland were Ukraine ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Belarus ($X), together accounting for 95% of total imports.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +88.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wood fuel import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, jumping by 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Germany ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
