Zinc Market Size in Poland

In 2022, the Polish zinc market increased by 2.5% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +5.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, zinc production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Zinc production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of zinc, unwrought (not alloyed) increased by 2.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, zinc exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of zinc exports from Poland, together accounting for 68% of total exports. Italy, Austria, Hungary and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Slovakia ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest markets for zinc exported from Poland worldwide, together comprising 69% of total exports. Italy, Austria, Hungary and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average zinc export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 22% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, zinc export price increased by +57.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 35%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Hungary ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Poland

In 2022, purchases abroad of zinc, unwrought (not alloyed) increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, zinc imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Finland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of zinc to Poland, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, zinc imports from Finland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Finland stood at +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-7.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (-0.6% per year).

In value terms, Finland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of zinc, unwrought (not alloyed) to Poland, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Finland amounted to +14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-1.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+8.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average zinc import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 24% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, zinc import price increased by +49.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
