Apricot Market Size in Portugal

The Portuguese apricot market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -13.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Apricot Production in Portugal

In value terms, apricot production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of apricots in Portugal fell to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -2.1% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 234% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apricot exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 223%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Austria (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main destinations of apricot exports from Portugal, with a combined 72% share of total exports. The UK, Germany, Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +133.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), Spain ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the largest markets for apricot exported from Portugal worldwide, together comprising 66% of total exports. The UK, Germany, Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +117.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average apricot export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of apricots decreased by -30.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apricot imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 93%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) was the main apricot supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, apricot imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+196.3% per year) and Germany (+10.7% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of apricots to Portugal, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports.
