In 2022, the Portuguese non-electric chainsaw market decreased by -7.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 107%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X units), Angola (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) were the main destinations of non-electric chainsaw exports from Portugal, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Tunisia, Algeria and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +152.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Angola ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for non-electric chainsaw exported from Portugal worldwide, together accounting for 63% of total exports. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight contraction. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -3.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 85%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X units), China (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main suppliers of non-electric chainsaw imports to Portugal, with a combined 80% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Romania and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +472.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
