Market Size for Cherries and Sour Cherries in Portugal

The Portuguese cherry and sour cherry market reduced dramatically to $X in 2022, waning by -28.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw noticeable growth. Cherry and sour cherry consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production reduced remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 227%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of cherries and sour cherries in Portugal contracted notably to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -30.9% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 160%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped remarkably in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cherries and sour cherries were harvested in Portugal; standing approx. at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of cherries and sour cherries, when their volume decreased by -19.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 1,108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 408% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for cherry and sour cherry exports from Portugal, accounting for a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, cherry and sour cherry exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), more than tenfold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain amounted to +32.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+5.0% per year) and Belgium (+42.3% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for cherries and sour cherries exports from Portugal, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Luxembourg, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain amounted to +24.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+7.3% per year) and Luxembourg (+79.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cherry and sour cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Luxembourg (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal

Cherry and sour cherry imports into Portugal fell to X tons in 2022, declining by -9.6% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 267%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 171%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) was the main cherry and sour cherry supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany (X tons), with a 2.7% share of total imports.
