Spain (X tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Portugal, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Guinea (X tons), with a 6.6% share.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest chicken meat supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, chicken meat imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 12% share.

The average chicken meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
