From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 68%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Portugal, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Guinea (X tons), with a 6.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain stood at +8.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+8.4% per year) and Guinea (+42.4% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from Portugal, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain totaled +7.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+7.3% per year) and Guinea (+41.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 10%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of chicken meat increased by 4.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -16.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest chicken meat supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, chicken meat imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain totaled +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+6.9% per year) and France (+1.5% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chicken meat to Portugal, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain totaled +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+5.3% per year) and France (-2.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average chicken meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
