In 2022, overseas shipments of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -72.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,505% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 224%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X kg), France (X kg) and Pakistan (X kg) were the main destinations of exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Portugal, with a combined 82% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +63.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports from Portugal, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Turkey stood at +10.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+42.3% per year) and Cambodia (+19.8% per year).

In 2022, the average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 354%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+109.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, when their volume decreased by -32.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +23.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 44%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the main suppliers of imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Portugal, together accounting for 86% of total imports. India and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +108.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Portugal, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+40.5% per year) and Spain (+49.1% per year).

In 2022, the average import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by +23.7% against 2020 indices. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
