In 2021, the Portuguese composite paperboard market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The third position in this ranking was taken by Angola (X tons), with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain stood at -46.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+19.6% per year) and Angola (-12.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for composite paperboard exported from Portugal were Senegal ($X), Spain ($X) and Angola ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by Cabo Verde, Germany and Sao Tome and Principe, which together accounted for a further 11%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +17.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average composite paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 396%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -27.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -19.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of composite paperboard imports to Portugal, with a combined 73% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland and Italy, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
