The Portuguese concentrated apple juice market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, concentrated apple juice exports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Spain (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of concentrated apple juice exports from Portugal, together comprising 89% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Morocco, Mozambique, France and the UK, which together accounted for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +89.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were France ($X per ton) and Morocco ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Portugal

Concentrated apple juice imports into Portugal soared to X tons in 2021, rising by 24% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 184%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, concentrated apple juice imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of concentrated apple juice imports to Portugal, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Germany, Poland and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +45.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Based on 2021 figures, concentrated apple juice import price decreased by -18.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 99%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
