Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -22.8% against 2019 indices. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, direct dye imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -21.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of direct dye to Portugal, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, direct dye imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), twofold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+57.3% per year) and Italy (+19.1% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and India ($X) were the largest direct dye suppliers to Portugal, together comprising 72% of total imports. Spain, Germany, Poland, Austria, Belgium and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
