In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
France (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of dried or smoked fish exports from Portugal, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Angola, Vietnam, Italy, the United States, China, Switzerland, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, which together accounted for a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +66.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for dried or smoked fish exported from Portugal were France ($X), Brazil ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Angola, the United States, Switzerland, the UK, Vietnam, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and China, which together accounted for a further 33%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +83.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dried or smoked fish export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of dried or smoked fish, when their volume increased by 7.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Sweden (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dried or smoked fish to Portugal, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, dried or smoked fish imports from Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Sweden was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+3.1% per year) and China (+0.4% per year).
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dried or smoked fish to Portugal, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Sweden amounted to +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+4.3% per year) and Spain (+3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average dried or smoked fish import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 13%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Iceland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
