Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 226% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 181% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Angola (X tons), France (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main destinations of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys exports from Portugal, with a combined 77% share of total exports.

As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Angola ($X per ton) and Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) and Mozambique ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Portugal
Ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports into Portugal declined to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -9% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 48%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +50.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys to Portugal, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-8.0% per year) and Croatia (+18.6% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys to Portugal, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Croatia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Croatia (+36.5% per year) and Germany (-7.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average ferro-cerium and pyrophoric alloys import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 8.5%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
