After four years of growth, the Portuguese baby food market decreased by -11.9% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a pronounced shrinkage. Baby food consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of food preparations for infants increased by 1.1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 71%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, baby food exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Angola (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of baby food exports from Portugal, together comprising 50% of total exports. The Netherlands, Nigeria, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Finland, Greece and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +179.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the largest markets for baby food exported from Portugal worldwide, together accounting for 45% of total exports. Sweden, Nigeria, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Finland, Greece and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Among the main countries of destination, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +201.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average baby food export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal
In 2021, the amount of food preparations for infants imported into Portugal declined to X tons, waning by -13.4% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, baby food imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest baby food supplier to Portugal, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, baby food imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-5.5% per year) and France (-17.4% per year).
In value terms, the largest baby food suppliers to Portugal were Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 75% of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +3.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
